
Randall S. Alberte, PhD

Dr. Alberte has had a diverse and innovative career in academic research and teaching, government R&D program development and management, defense contract R&D development, and start-up biotechnology. During his academic career at the University of Chicago and UCLA, he supervised numerous doctoral students, post-doctorals, and visiting scientists. Dr. Alberte also developed and served as the founding Director of Biotechnology at Florida Gulf Coast University. In his government career, Dr. Alberte held a top-secret clearance, and developed and managed a diversity of basic and applied biotechnology programs, ranging from nanotechnology and biosensors to submarine technology and chemical/biological defense. He received the Meritorious Civilian Service Award from the Department of Navy. Dr. Alberte served on many DOD and national committees where he was actively involved in developing R&D policy and programs. He continued the development of biotechnological capabilities for both defense and civilian uses while Head of Biotechnology and Areté Fellow at Areté Associates, a defense R&D contractor. In 1999, Dr. Alberte joined PhycoGen, Inc., a start-up biotechnology company as CSO. At PhycoGen he set-up an R&D program to develop intellectual property and a platform technology focused on novel chemistries for the control of bioadhesion processes targeting new therapeutics and diagnostics. Dr. Alberte continued this role in start-up biotech in 2003 as a founder and CSO of Cernofina LLC, a biomedical company addressing small molecule therapeutics and diagnostics for infectious diseases. He is the primary inventor on more than 25 issued or pending patents and has authored more than 150 referred publications Dr. Alberte received his BA from Gettysburg College, a PhD from Duke University and did his post-doctoral training at UCLA.
