HerbalScience was founded in 2001 in Naples, Florida by sequential entrepreneur Robert Gow and banker and consumer product expert David H. P. King, who set their sights on bringing significant technological innovation and value creation to the rapidly growing botanical ingredients arena for functional foods and consumer products. Knowing that breakthrough technologies would be required to achieve their goal of producing batch-to-batch-reliable and evidence-based functional ingredients from diverse botanical sources, they recruited leading botanical scientists, chemists and chemical engineers and began developing a new generation of proprietary extraction technologies and equipment to manufacture reproducible ingredients from variable botanical feed stocks. After developing five generations of extraction equipment, HerbalScience designed, developed and opened in Singapore today’s most advanced botanical extraction research and development facility. This facility was expanded in 2008 to include a cGMP extraction facility (HerbalScience Singapore Pte. Ltd) that produces the industry’s highest quality botanical functional ingredients.
After developing the breakthrough technology that enabled the production of batch-reliable functional ingredients, the technology development effort was directed toward creating a Platform Technology that could utilize modern and state-of-the-art biomedical tools and capabilities as well as expertise to establish and validate function and mode-of-action. In this way, state-of-the-art analytical equipment was acquired 2007. Later that year, the HerbalScience Naples, Florida, facility developed an entirely new approach to the discovery of key bioactive compounds in botanicals. HerbalScience is now able to produce production quantities of batch-reliable, science-proven, safe, and efficacious botanical functional ingredients – an industry first. HerbalScience has developed IP on more than 50 botanicals, has had issued or filed more than 40 patents in the U.S. and internationally, and has developed more than twelve novel products since third quarter 2007.
In 2008, HerbalScience established two subsidiaries: Complete Health Ltd and HSRx LLC. Complete Health Ltd is a Joint Venture with the People’s Republic of China’s largest food group, Bright Foods Group Ltd. The Joint Venture is charged with assisting the state-owned industry, Bright Foods Group, with functional food product development and distribution. Functional food or healthy food is the fastest growing segment of China’s food industry. HSRx LLC develops and pursues the discovery and development of new pharmaceutical drug leads.
By becoming a technology leader in the fastest growing segment of the global food, supplement and beverage markets, HerbalScience is positioned to become the leading producer of evidence-based and research-proven effective and safe functional ingredients.
